HF System Components in detail
The Barrett 2050 HF transceiver, the centre piece of the 2000 series of HF communications equipment, combines current technology with the intuitive, "ease of use" that has become synonymous with Barrett Communications equipment.
In addition to providing all common modes of HF transmission, most currently used selective call formats and MIL STD 188-141B Automatic Link Establishment, the 2050 transceiver has a new generation, simple to operate, frequency hopping option.
The heart of the 2050 is a flexible soft-core processor and powerful DSP system that delivers superior reception and noise reduction while providing very low current consumption.
Housed in a lightweight, extremely strong sealed aluminium chassis, 2050 meets MIL STD 810F for drop, dust, temperature, shock and vibration.
The 2050 transceiver is packaged ready to operate as a desktop transceiver, and by adding the inexpensive "mobile pack" the 2050 becomes a mobile (trunk mounted) transceiver. This simplifies the logistics of holding base station and mobile transceivers within large organisations.
Teaming the versatile 2050 transceiver with other 2000 series products provides email, fax, telephone and data connectivity within an HF network and onwards to both the international telephone network and the Internet.
Physically 40% smaller than our 900 series, the 2050 in a local control configuration measures only 185mm W x 270mm D x 70mm H and weighs less than 2.6kg.
Harsh conditions require tough, uncompromising equipment. Dependable, secure communications are essential to the survival of your mission and your staff.
The Barrett 2040 is the result of 30 years experience in the provision and support of HF communications globally. Employing Barrett's well known intuitive operator interface, teamed with current communications technology and rugged packaging, the 2040 provides an exceptionally specified, lightweight, HF anpack.
Barrett's unique 2000 series architecture allows each transceiver to be configured from a simple open channel voice radio to a fully optioned frequency hopping, digitally encrypted system transceiver with MIL-STD Automatic Link Establishment (ALE).

ALE to MIL-STD-188-141B
GPS equipped
MIL-STD-810F compliant
Digital and Analogue security
DSP based
Less than 210mm square
Weighs only 6.4Kg including a 10 Ah battery cartridge
The 2040 manpack is equipped with a fully automatic antenna tuner allowing the deployment of a full range of tactical and static antennas. An inbuilt battery management system supports its light weight Lithium Ion battery cartridges. All connections to the IP67 rated manpack are made using MIL-STD connectors. Configuring the 2040 is simple using either the Windows based programming system through the auxiliary socket or wirelessly using the IrDA port. Emergency field programming can be performed, by password entry, using the front panel keypad.
The 2040's range of carry systems include British Army approved back packs which allow full webbing to be utilised and are available in UN blue as well as the traditional drab olive to ensure neutrality is observed when deployed in the humanitarian and peacekeeping roles.
All 2000 series transceivers including the 2040 manpack have common operating features and functions and major internal modules, reducing training, inventory, maintenance and system ownership costs to a minimum.
The Barrett 2020 Email Fax & Data System
The Barrett 2020 Email, Fax & Data System is ideal for the provision of full telecommunication facilities within organisations with remote-sited operations. The 2020 provides a simple automatic interface for speech, data, fax and email among all stations in the HF Network with full connectivity to Internet, email and fax facilities via the international telephone network. After the initial capital equipment cost, which is comparable or less than current satellite systems, there are no ongoing time charges costs.
The Barrett 2020 has been designed specifically to be simple to install and easy to use. For the system administrator, there exists a variety of automatic linking options and a link scheduler all fully interoperable with FED STD ALE and CCIR Selective calling protocols, providing a comprehensive and automated networking solution. To the user the 2020 system is transparent; emails are sent and received via the users own and familiar mail client software such as MS Outlook, Lotus Notes or any other common email program.
Barrett 2020 email systems use state of the art and proven Clover 2000 modems, employing the latest Digital Signal Processing (DSP) techniques and specifically designed for HF operation. Modulation formats vary from simple robust two phase to multi-level differential phase four level amplitude modulation modes which combined with sophisticated compression algorithms within the Barrett 2020 operating software produce compressed on-air data rates up to 14400 bps, subject to link quality and file compressibility.
Fully integrated with Barrett Communications' HF transceiver range and accessories, the Barrett 2020 HF email system is easy to install and set up. However if assistance is required our international network of sales and service agents are ready to serve.
The Barrett 2024 HF point to point fax system
The Barrett 2024 Fax system is a simple and reliable hard copy fax transfer system for high frequency radio networks requiring minimal system set up and operator training.
The Barrett 2024 HF Fax system is ideal for providing fax connections between sites that have no connection to telephone systems. An HF Fax station consists of a Barrett 2050 transceiver and 2024 modem, a suitable power supply and antenna and an inexpensive standard G3 fax machine. No computer software is required.
Operators simply establish a radio link by voice, Selcall or ALE, put the documents to be transmitted to the distant station in the fax machine and dial in the remote systems number, the system takes care of the rest. When the Fax has been received by the remote station an acknowledgement is printed on the local fax just as it would be when using a fax connected to a telephone line.
System set up is simple and fully integrated into a standard 2000 series equipment enclosure and uses the robust and high-speed Clover 2000 protocol to transmit the fax digitally and error free. With typical good HF conditions a standard page of text can be sent in less than 3 minutes. Slightly longer than a telephone fax but with no cost.
The Barrett 2024 Fax modem also provides the same facilities as a Barrett 2020 system and can be connected to a computer running Barrett 2020 operating software to provide email and data transfer with Internet connection.
